Northern Ireland: Sinn Fein shrugs off threat over ‘IRA killing’

SINN FEIN dismissed claims by DUP First Minister Peter Robinson yesterday that it could be behind the killing of a former IRA man.

Mr Robinson warned of “repercussions” for Sinn Fein, including being ejected from government, if it transpired that the IRA shot dead Kevin McGuigan in the republican Short Strand area of Belfast on Wednesday night.

It is understood Mr McGuigan, who was a former IRA prisoner but had fallen out with the organisation, was a suspect in the murder of former IRA leader Gerard “Jock” Davison in the nearby Markets area three months ago.

This has prompted speculation that Mr McGuigan’s murder was revenge carried out by Mr Davison’s associates in the republican movement.

Sinn Fein MLA Alex Maskey branded such speculation unhelpful and unwelcome.

“I don’t accept for one second that the IRA has been involved in this — it just does not register at all,” he said.
