Christmas deliveries could be hit by industrial action after postal workers yesterday voted overwhelmingly for strike action over pay.
The staff - members of the Communication Workers' Union (CWU) - work in the Post Office's Administration and Supply Chain, collecting and delivering cash and high-value stock to 11,500 of Britain's post office branches.
They were due a pay rise in April.
CWU says the Post Office initially refused to negotiate before going on to propose a below-inflation increase.
CWU deputy general secretary Dave Ward said: "Thanks entirely to the unreasonable attitude of Post Office management, a pre-Christmas national strike is looking inevitable.
"Even at this late stage, the Post Office can avoid a pre-Christmas strike by meeting our members' just claim for a decent pay rise."
He said the Post Office made a record £107 million profit this year thanks to the hard work of its staff, and could comfortably afford a fair increase.
