Rolls-Royce sneaks in outsourcing

ROLLS-ROYCE faced accusations yesterday of outsourcing hundreds of high-tech engineering jobs “by the back door.”

The aerospace giant has announced it is to open a new engineering production site in Bangalore in India, with the creation of 500 jobs.

But at the same time it is carrying out a “global restructuring exercise” with the loss of 2,600 posts in Britain.

The Unite union said the company’s exercise had already led to the proposed closure of Rolls-Royce’s precision manufacturing facility in Derby and its turbine machining facility in Ansty, Warwickshire, with the union warning that Britain’s economy would suffer as a result.

The union accused the company of exporting jobs to India.

Unite regional officer Tony Tinley said: “The company’s global restructuring exercise is being used as cover to off-shore jobs via the back door.

“Today’s announcement will be good news for workers in India, but it will be viewed as a kick in the teeth by UK workers and apprentices who face an increasingly uncertain future.”
