Barnet told to scrap sell-off bid

BARNET COUNCIL should ditch its bid to flog off its catering services after two out of three would-be contractors pulled out of the bidding process, local workers said yesterday.

The north London council put its education, skills and school meals services out to tender in January but EC Harris pulled out before talks began and Capita followed suit last week, leaving just Mott MacDonald interested.

Unison branch secretary John Burgess said “alarm bells” should be ringing.

“The decision of officers to go ahead simply reinforces the feelings of the workforce that the council is wedded to outsourcing.”

Unison members will walk out on July 8 to keep their jobs in-house.
