Labour 'must commit' on rail renationalisation

THE TUC called on the Labour Party yesterday to get its act together and commit to renationalising rail — noting that the Tories had just brought track infrastructure back into the public sector.

“What are you waiting for? If the Tories can renationalise the track, you can and should renationalise the trains,” RMT acting general secretary Mick Cash challenged the Labour leadership.

“And don’t stop there — let's have an all-out campaign to renationalise the buses too.

Aslef general secretary Mick Whelan welcomed the return of Network Rail to the public sector — but noted we’d been saddled with £30 billion in debt.

“We paid for the infrastructure, but they took the profits,” he said.

TSSA general secretary Manuel Cortes denounced “shameless” rail privateers who have threatened to sue a Labour government if it renationalises the sector.

“I’ve got a message for them: you will not just be taking on Labour. You will be taking on the entire country,” he roared.

“And to Labour — this is wider than rail. Why not water, why not energy?”
