It’s the final day of the Glorious Goodwood meeting and the big betting race is the Stewards Cup at 3.50 in which Ninjago may well be able to overcome the loss of stable jockey Richard Hughes jumping ship to one of the favourites, Intrinsic.
The selection ran superbly in this race last year, just getting going too late to finish fifth and has been kept fresh for this contest with only the two runs this season.
However, he showed himself as good as ever on his seasonal debut at Newmarket behind Goldream and off exactly the same mark as 12 months ago he should have a huge say — especially with Ryan Moore in the saddle.
With the weather unsettled around the local area the going could very well ease, which won’t be a problem for Ninjago or Intrinsic.
But if the ground became really soft then I would also want to have a saver on Boomerang Bob, who has been running well on ground which is way too quick and showed himself on good terms with himself last time out at Chester.
The Consolation Stewards Cup at 2.05 looks even more competitive and I was really keen on Mission Approved to be a huge player but the possibility of the ground easing could cause serious problems.
Should the rains miss the Sussex track then I think he is going to be very hard to beat and you need to have a saver on him, but the percentage call has to be Secondo (e/w) as he looks to have been trained with this race in mind.
Roger Charlton’s charge needs time between his races to be seen at his best so a 48-day break is a blessing and stall 20 could also be a pretty good sit. As with the main race there are so many dangers with the likes of top-weight Humidor, down to a career low mark, outsider Noble Deed (well drawn) and Kinglami also feared.
The Nassau Stakes at 3.15 doesn’t look up to standard this year and with the rains on their way this affords a really good chance for French challenger Narniyn to grab a nice prize after finishing a creditable fourth in the Paris Grand Prix.
At Newmarket, I fancy we will see a huge run from Harwoods Volante in the opener at 2.20, while later on at Headquarters Three Robins could go well at a large price in the big fillies’ nursery at 2.55.
Elsewhere, the best bet of the day could come courtesy of Orient Class in the 5.40 at Doncaster.
Given a truly awful ride by Graham Lee two outings back at Pontefract when he kept to the far side on soft ground (a big no-no there), he ran much better at Redcar last time and the forecast rain is perfect for him.
Over at Hamilton, the best bet on the card could come courtesy of Hazelrigg, slowly returning to form and the prospect of rain is a big plus for the nine-year-old in the 7.15.
