PROTESTERS ambushed a shop and estate agents in east London over the weekend in response to increased gentrification and the dire shortage of truly affordable homes.
Around 200 people carrying torch flames and wearing pig masks — in a nod towards PM David Cameron’s Piggate debacle — marched through Shoreditch and Brick Lane on Saturday night.
Some cracked windows of Marsh and Parsons, which lets and sells homes at eye-watering prices that are out of reach for working-class communities in the area.
Red paint was also thrown at the Cereal Killer Cafe — where a large bowl of novelty cornflakes costs around £4. Staff, who claimed customers were still in the shop, barricaded themselves in. Seven police vans and a helicopter were deployed to deal with the so-called “street party,” as described by organisers Class War. Social media users attacked them for targeting a small business.
The protest group wrote on Facebook: “We don’t want luxury flats that no-one can afford, we want genuinely affordable housing.
“We don’t want pop-up gin bars or brioche buns — we want community.”
