Leicester City defender Danny Simpson was told yesterday that he will not play again for the club while they look at the ongoing assault case.
Simpson was found guilty on Wednesday for assaulting his ex-girlfriend and could face time in jail.
A club statement read: “He’ll not be considered for first-team duties while the club examines legal proceedings.
“Due to the ongoing nature of the legal process, the club will be making no further comment on the matter.”
Simpson was arrested on December 29 after police were called round to the house of his ex-partner’s in Worsley. Manchester Magistrates Court heard how the former Manchester United, Newcastle and QPR player was found straddling her with his “hands around the throat.”
His ex, Stephanie Ward, released a statement on Thursday saying that even though she called the police on Simpson after a drunken row, she didn’t want to file a complaint against Simpson and that her statement — which denies that she was attacked that night — was dismissed at court.
Simpson denies the charge and will be sentenced next month, though he will appeal the conviction.
