A WAR crimes tribunal sentenced a man to death yesterday for rape and murder during Bangladesh’s 1971 war of independence from Pakistan.
Judge Obaidul Hassan handed down the sentence against Forkan Mollick, who worked at a local office of the Islamist Jamaat-e-Islami party, which had organised people to fight against independence.
Mr Mollick was a low-ranking member of the Pakistani Muslim League in 1971 when he committed the crimes in southern Patuakhali district for which he was convicted.
As he was taken away in a prison van, he shouted protestations of innocence.
“I am innocent, I was (Jamaat-e-Islami’s) employee, that’s why I have been punished,” he said.
More than 15 people, mostly leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami, have been convicted of war crimes by two tribunals.
