Train attack highlights crucial role of guards

AXEING guards will put passengers at greater risk, a rail union said yesterday following another sexual assault on a train.

RMT said the victim of the attack, which occurred on January 6, praised the “unbelievably kind and compassionate manner” in which the guard assisted her afterwards.

The guard on the service between Manchester Airport and York helped the passenger report the matter to the police.

Officers have since reviewed CCTV and launched an investigation into a serious sexual assault.

The event follows a similar event on the Merseyrail network in December.

RMT general secretary Mick Cash said: “This latest awful incident has come to light on the very day that our reps have gone into crunch talks with Merseyrail bosses who want to remove all guards from their trains.”
