REIGNING world champions England finished fourth in the Women’s Six Nations after losing 21-15 to France at Twickenham on Saturday night.
But France came second on points difference to Ireland, who crushed Scotland 73-3.
England had chosen to play only a handful of World Cup winners — including Rochelle Clark, making her 100th appearance — for the sake of the squad’s development and France administered another defeat after previous losses to Wales and Ireland.
Full-back Jessy Tremouliere slotted an early penalty before captain Gaelle Minot powered over from a 21st-minute maul for a converted try and a 10-0 lead.
Tremouliere landed two more penalties with one in reply from centre Amber Reed but England were back in the hunt when flanker Hannah Gallagher took prop Laura Keates’s pass to power over.
But Tremouliere dotted down in the corner for a personal 16-point haul to ensure Harriet Millar-Mills’s late converted try was no more than a consolation for England.
