Man arrested for stabbing attack in Germany ‘not fit to stand trial’

GERMAN authorities are doubtful as to whether a man arrested over a stabbing attack at a station near Munich can be held criminally responsible, prosecutor Ken Heidenreich said yesterday.

He said that the suspect’s statements don’t fit together, implying that he may not be mentally fit to stand trial.

Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann said after a cabinet meeting in Munich that the 27-year-old man had confessed to carrying out the attack.

He added that the suspect apparently had psychological problems and drug issues.

Witnesses said that the man had shouted: “Allahu Akbar” while stabbing a number of people, one fatally, at or near the Grafing railway station, where he had arrived by train from Munich in the early hours of the morning.

One woman reported hearing the words: “Infidel, you must die” during the frenzied attacks.

Police said, however, that there was no evidence that he had accomplices or was part of any extremist network.
