Khan: Fabric closure may signal end of nightlife

SADIQ KHAN warned the decision to close one of London’s biggest nightclubs yesterday will lead to a decline of the city’s nightlife.

The London mayor said he was “disappointed” at the decision by Islington Council to revoke Fabric’s licence following drug concerns raised by police.

The council found Fabric had a “culture of drug use” that the club’s staff were “incapable of controlling.”

The club became mired in controversy and was forced to close temporarily after two teenagers died from suspected drug overdoses earlier this year.

Mr Khan said: “The issues faced by Fabric point to a wider problem of how we protect London’s night-time economy while ensuring it is safe and enjoyable for everyone.”

Mixmag clubbing magazine’s digital editor Seb Wheeler suggested introducing drugs testing that would allow users to determine their content before taking them would be a better response than closing clubs.
