Ceasefire shattered in Donetsk and Lugansk

ARTILLERY fire rocked the outskirts of Ukraine’s rebel-held city of Donetsk yesterday in the latest clashes to threaten the ceasefire.

The sound of intensive explosions came at 9am from the area around Donetsk airport, one of several key flashpoints.

Eighty miles away in Lugansk, fighting with small arms and 120mm mortars also broke out.

Moscow claimed on Saturday that Kiev was “bluffing” on weapons withdrawal.

But despite the renewed firing, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko insisted late on Saturday that Kiev was adhering to the peace deal.

“Ukraine strictly and consistently implements these steps,” he claimed.

Meanwhile, top Nato commander US air force General Philip Breedlove said the West should consider using all its tools to help Ukraine, including weapons.

“I do not think that any tool of US or any other nation’s power should necessarily be off the table,” he said.

“Could it be destabilising? The answer is Yes.”
