Prices rise £11k in a year as Tories push ‘£450k starter homes’

HOUSE prices were revealed yesterday to have risen by more than £11,000 in the last year.

The average cost in England and Wales is now £188,270 after prices rose by 6.4 per cent over the past 12 months, according to Land Registry statistics.

Since November, prices have risen by 1.2 per cent monthly.

“With house prices rising rapidly every year, it’s no wonder that so many people are losing hope of ever being able to get a foot on the housing ladder,” said Shelter chief Campbell Robb.

Tories’ plans for so-called “affordable starter homes” costing up to £450,000 are unlikely to help ordinary households escape the expensive private rental sector.

This is because the government’s proposed Housing Bill makes no allowance for building social housing.

Mr Robb added: “What this country desperately needs is a commitment by the government to invest in building homes that people on ordinary incomes can actually afford to rent or buy.”
