Manager sackings record set to be broken

The number of managers sacked by league clubs is on course to break the record for one season, according to new figures published yesterday.

There were a record 27 dismissals to December 31 — three more than the previous record of 24 which was set last season.

The League Managers’ Association’s quarterly report states: “If the trend continues we are on course to exceed the season total dismissal record of 46 set in 2006-07.”

Half of the Championship’s 24 clubs changed managers in the first half of the season — another record and five more than the same period of the previous two seasons.

“The average tenure of the current Championship managers remains worryingly low, at 0.82 years.”

Also, 13 of the 27 dismissed this season were in their first jobs as managers, highlighting the difficulty of establishing themselves in a position.
