Laid-off timber workers dispute disappearing pay

WORKERS made redundant after a tragic blast at a timber mill yesterday challenged their bosses over unpaid wages.
Four workers at Wood Treatment Ltd in Cheshire were killed in a huge explosion.

The rest of the traumatised workforce soon learned they would lose their jobs — but the company has refused to pay staff during the redundancy consultation period.

GMB, which represents the workers, said this brought Wood Treatment in breach of the law.

In a letter to mill-owner George Boden, GMB official Ray Carrick says the union is submitting a collective grievance.

“The staff are still employees of your company until such time as the consultation period is completed and a final decision is made,” he wrote.

“These staff should be on continuous pay during this period. Failure to make the payment of wages to your employees is a breach of contract and an unlawful deduction of their wages.”
