CELTIC were drawn against Icelandic side FC Stjarnan in the second qualifying round of the Champions League yesterday, writes Andrew Muirhead.
The Scottish champions were seeded in the draw and will face the champions of Iceland as Ronny Deila hopes to lead his side to the group stages of Europe’s top club competition.
Celtic played Icelandic side KR Reykjavik in last season’s Champions League qualifying campaign beating them 5-0 on aggregate. They then lost to Legia Warsaw but an administrative error saw the Polish side forfeit the second leg of their tie 3-0, sending Deila’s side into the next round where they were knocked out by Maribor.
Deila then led his side to the knockout stages of the Europa League where they lost 4-3 on aggregate, with Guarin scoring the winner two minutes from time to end Celtic’s European adventure.
Celtic have a 100 per cent record against Icelandic opposition — two wins against KR Reykjavik and two wins against Valur in the 1975-76 European Cup Winners Cup campaign running out 9-0 winners on aggregate.
In the draw for the second round of Europa League qualifying, Inverness were paired with Astra of Romania while St Johnstone face Alashkert of Armenia and fellow Scottish side Aberdeen take on Macedonian side Shkendija in the first.
