‘Get rid of sexist marriage certificates’

CAROLINE LUCAS urged MPs yesterday to put pressure on the government to change sexist marriage certificates that ignore the mothers of brides and grooms.

Certificates currently have space for the names and professions of the fathers of the couples tying the knot — but mothers are excluded.

The Green MP for Brighton Pavilion said the law should not “perpetuate the offensive and outdated message that marriage is a business transaction between fathers.”

Prime Minister David Cameron accepted the need for amending the “discriminatory” certificates last year but 14 months later no action has been taken.

Ms Lucas tabled an early day motion in Parliament this week, signed by MPs from across the Commons, calling for Mr Cameron to honour his promise.
