Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed yesterday to do everything possible to prevent world powers from reaching a “bad and dangerous deal” with Iran over its nuclear programme.
He told a weekly cabinet meeting that the deal would “cast a dark cloud on the future of the state of Israel and its security.”
Germany and UN security council members, including Israel’s primary ally the US, hope to clinch a deal next month setting long-term restrictions on Tehran’s programme of uranium enrichment.
Mr Netanyahu’s comments indicate that he is refusing to step back from the diplomatic row with the White House that next month’s speech about Iran to the US Congress has caused.
The visit was arranged behind President Barack Obama’s back by the Israeli leader and Republican House Speaker John Boehner.
Israeli opposition leaders urged Mr Netanyahu at the weekend to cancel his speech because it was endangering Tel Aviv’s relationship with the US.
Labour Party leader Isaac Herzog said that, instead of warning the world about Iran’s nuclear programme, the controversy was damaging Israeli-US ties.
Former Israeli secret service Mossad head Shabtai Shavit joined a group of former top security officials at the weekend to call on Israel’s leadership to do more to pursue peace with the Palestinians.
Mr Shavit said that Israel should accept the long-dormant 2002 Arab peace plan that offered comprehensive peace with the Arab world in exchange for a peace agreement with the Palestinians.
