QUESTIONS were raised yesterday about the suitability of keeping wild animals in zoos after a zookeeper was seriously wounded after being stamped on and headbutted by a rhino.
The man, who is in his fifties, suffered chest, abdomen and pelvis injuries at Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire at around 8.15am.
He was immersed in water during the incident and was taken by ambulance to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge in a serious but stable condition.
Dave Tamarro, of the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust, said: “When we arrived it was clear that the patient had received a number of injuries.”
He said paramedics stabilised the patient while the air ambulance was on its way.
A People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals spokesman said the attack highlighted problems with Britain’s zoos. “How many more people have to be hurt or killed by wild animals in zoos and circuses before we accept that these animals are not suited at all for a life in captivity?”
