South London: Lecturers back on strike against 100 job cuts

LECTURERS in south London are back on strike today as their campaign against cuts and 100 job losses kicks up a notch, writes Joana Ramiro.

Lewisham Southwark College (LeSoCo) staff will start their three-day strike with picket lines across their four campuses in Lewisham, Camberwell, Deptford and Waterloo.

An early morning rally is also planned in preparation for tomorrow’s protest at the Camberwell campus which is earmarked for closure.

A LeSoCo English teacher, who asked to remain unnamed for fear of retribution by the further education college’s management, told the Star how she felt “disappointed and angry” over the proposed cuts.

“A huge amount of money is spent on consultants, interim managers and highly paid senior management,” she said.

“This is part of the reason that support for dyslexic students and courses for the most vulnerable in society are being axed.
“We will fight this attack because we care about our students’ futures.”

The college is proposing to axe 112 posts despite concerns expressed by the University and College Union that management did not consider other “financial strategies.”
