A LEFT-WING member of Labour’s national executive has been reinstated after her suspension for supporting former Tower Hamlets mayor Lutfur Rahman.
The party launched action against Christine Shawcroft on May 11 in response to her outspoken support for Mr Rahman, who had been banned from holding public office after being found guilty of corruption and illegal practices two weeks earlier.
But a Labour spokesman confirmed yesterday that she would face no disciplinary action as a result of a party investigation.
The executive member of 15 years had been suspended from all party activities for almost two months.
She said it was a “pity” that the debacle had stopped her standing to be secretary of her local branch, but described the suspension as “the nicest rest I’ve had for 20 years!”
Following Mr Rahman’s ouster, it was claimed that Ms Shawcraft was campaigning against Labour mayoral candidate John Biggs in his new electoral battle for Tower Hamlets.
But at an interview with two party officers last month, she argued that she was “campaigning against miscarriages of justice” and not the Labour Party.
Her case was due to be heard by Labour’s organisation committee next week.
However, Ms Shawcroft has revealed that Labour general secretary Iain McNicol called her on Monday to say that she had been reinstated as a party and executive member.
“So that appears to be that,” she wrote on Facebook.
“Now all we have to do is clear Lutfur Rahman’s name and support the people of Greece.”
