Five Hong Kong democracy protest march organisers arrested

Civil Human Rights Front activists complain of politically motivated charges of obstructing traffic and police and disobeying instructions

Five people from a Hong Kong activist group that organised a giant pro-democracy rally on Tuesday were arrested yesterday on charges of blocking traffic, obstructing police and violating traffic safety.

Police said that the two men and three women are accused of obstructing traffic by driving slowly and encouraging protesters to sit in the street, obstructing police and disobeying instructions.

They will be detained while they are being investigated, police said in a statement.

The group, the Civil Human Rights Front, complained that the charges were politically motivated, calling the arrests “obvious political pressure.”

Tuesday’s rally was said by police to have attracted 100,000 people at its peak, while the organisers put the total at 510,000.

“The government did not respond to the 510,000 people who took to the streets of Hong Kong and instead made political arrests of organisers,” the Front said in a statement.
