RAIL union RMT has confirmed new dates for strike action over ScotRail’s “disgraceful and cavalier” attitude towards jobs and safety as management insist on imposing driver-only operation (DOO) trains.
The new action follows a series of “rock-solid” strikes across Scotland, including last weekend, which the union says have yet to produce any meaningful progress on the core issues of the dispute.
The Scottish government convened a resilience committee to undermine last weekend’s action, which coincided with the golf Open Championship, and called for strikes to be suspended.
The union aims to halt the extension of DOO trains on all ScotRail services and seeks to keep control of the power-operated doors in the hands of guards.
RMT general secretary Mick Cash welcomed the “resilience and determination” of members taking strike action, adding that it was “extraordinary that Abellio/Scotrail continue to ignore the strength of feeling amongst their staff over the extension of DOO.”
RMT says it has repeatedly tried to engage in talks with Scotrail through conciliation service Acas but progress has been blocked by management attempting to divide the workforce.
Mr Cash said: “The entire trade union movement stands shoulder to shoulder with the ScotRail staff fighting for the basic principles of rail safety” who welcome the “fantastic support” received from the travelling public.
He added that the “workforce knows only too well that there is a very real threat to passengers of watering down and wiping out the safety-critical role of the guard on these Scotrail services.”
A Scotrail spokesperson said: “Our staff have gone great lengths to keep trains running.”
Two further 24-hour strikes are planned for this Sunday and the next.
