At least six people were left dead with bodies strewn across a Glasgow road yesterday after an out-of-control bin lorry drove into them.

The council vehicle travelled north on Queen Street and into George Square, striking pedestrians outside the Gallery of Modern Art.

“The bin lorry just lost control. It went along the pavement, knocking everyone like pinballs,” witness Melanie Greg told reporters.

“There was a baby in a buggy and it just continued knocking people down until it ended up in the building. Quite horrific, very scary.”

Restaurant owner George Smith told the BBC that the driver had reportedly suffered a heart attack.

Police declared a major incident and, at the time of printing, had confirmed “six people have been fatally injured.”

Seven were seriously injured and taken to nearby hospitals.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon tweeted: “My thoughts with everyone involved in dreadful George Square incident.”
