Scotland: Hundreds of Greens at biggest conference

THE Scottish Greens held their largest conference to date at the weekend.

A sister organisation to the Green Party of England and Wales, the party said that about 700 delegates had attended, a seven-fold increase on previous years.

Delegates voted to support a campaign of non-compliance with the Tories’ Trade Union Bill, which was slammed by activist Sarah Beattie-Smith as “an atrocious attack on the most basic rights of workers.”

The conference saw the launch of a Green trade union group and was addressed by STUC general secretary Grahame Smith.

Delegates also agreed to campaign for rent controls in order to tackle rising housing prices in a motion proposed by party co-convener Maggie Chapman and expressed support for the boycott, divestment and sanctions campaign against the Israeli occupation of Palestine.

The Greens also backed an “independent” campaign to remain inside the European Union, expressing caution about being associated with potential partners in the official In campaign.
