Working parents skipping meals to afford housing

A SHOCKING 880,000 parents have resorted to skipping meals to keep a roof above their kids’ heads — despite being in work.

Shelter revealed yesterday that 10 per cent of parents have forgone food in the last 12 months to ensure they have the cash to pay rent or meet mortgage payments.

One-third have cut back on food bills for the whole family.

And 13 per cent — equivalent to 1.1 million parents across England — have been forced to put off paying for new shoes for their kids.

Shelter highlighted the case of Katherine and her partner, who are struggling despite working full-time.

“My husband and I don’t have breakfast because we can’t afford it and we miss evening meals two or three times a month to help with the mortgage.”

Shelter chief executive Campbell Robb called on the government to ensure there’s a “safety net that’s strong enough to catch families who fall on hard times.”
