Poor doors owners to talk with activists

Housing campaigners reached gained an initial victory over owners of “apartheid doors” building 1 Commercial Street in London yesterday.

New freehold owner Hondo Enterprises’s executive director Taylor McWilliams agreed to sit down and talk with members of the Poor Doors campaign.

Outraged activists had mounted weekly pickets after it emerged that the building’s social tenants were forced to use a shabby alleyway to gain entry while wealthy inhabitants enjoyed a grand lobby with concierge service.

The concession comes just days after previous owners Redrow sold up amid the uproar.

Class War Lewisham West candidate Ian Bone wrote on Facebook: “McWilliams agreed to set up a meeting of all those who have ownership or interest of some part of the building — from housing association to Hondo — to discuss possibilities for ending the separate entrances.

“We have achieved unprecedented talks that show that with some determination and energy and persistence poor doors countrywide are not a done deal.”
