Labour Party leaders have suffered ‘silly’ abuse before

JEREMY CORBYN says he is suffering the same “silly” abuse over his dress sense as Keir Hardie faced more than 100 years ago.

The current Labour leader drew the parallel with the party’s founding father after a notorious Commons clash over the issue with David Cameron last month.

The posh Tory PM, who spends thousands on his tailored suits, told him to “put on a proper suit, do up your tie and sing the national anthem.”

But Mr Corbyn said he was proud to be the first Labour leader with a beard since Hardie, who also faced Tory taunts over his clothing.

Rather than wear the MPs’ “uniform” of black frock coat, black silk top hat and starched wing collar, he sported at plain tweed suit, a red tie and a deerstalker.

“I know we’ve moved on from these silly jibes and no modern prime minister would go anywhere near that,” he declared to roars of laughter.
