FAST-FOOD workers targeted McDonald’s yesterday in a growing global campaign against the industry’s low wages and exploitation.
Employees staged a picket outside the burger chain’s Whitehall store to demand a living wage, an end to zero-hours contracts and union recognition.
They were supported by Labour MP John McDonnell and leaders of bakers’ union BFAWU, which has helped organise the campaign.
“These hugely profitable companies need to understand that they have a social responsibility to the communities they operate in,” Mr McDonnell said.
“We’re demanding better pay, better conditions and dignity in the workplace.
“It’s a fair aim that has already garnered the support of countless numbers of people of all ages, celebrities, bishops and MPs.”
The protest is part of an international day of action for fast-food workers’ rights supported by the global food workers’ confederation IUF.
