A FEDERAL judge ordered the US military to allow an independent medical evaluation on Tuesday for hunger-striking Guantanamo prisoner Abu Wa’el Dhiab.
Judge Gladys Kessler directed the government to allow the Syrian prisoner to be examined by experts chosen by his lawyers as soon as possible.
Lawyers had warned her on August 5 that Mr Dhiab’s health had deteriorated sharply as a result of his protest at the US concentration camp on Cuba
The US government had opposed the request, claiming his health had not deteriorated.
Bringing in outside experts, they argued, would undermine their ability to get other prisoners to co-operate with medical care at the camp.
Mr Dhiab has been held without charge since August 2002.
He has been on a long-term hunger strike to fight the delay in getting final approval from the US government for his resettlement in Uruguay.
