Tennis: Edmund’s first round debut in France

Britain’s Kyle Edmund secured a place in the French Open first round for the first time in his career yesterday after he beat Spain’s Adrian Menendez-Maceiras 6-1 6-4.

It means Edmund has made it to the main draw of consecutive grand slams after the 20-year-old qualified for the Australian Open in January, before losing to American Steve Johnson in the opening round.

A number of the top seeds were drawn against qualifiers yesterday, meaning Edmund could now face the likes of Andy Murray, Roger Federer and Tomas Berdych in Paris.

It is also the first time at Roland Garros since 2006 that Britain has had three men in the main draw.

In women’s qualifying, British number two Johanna Konta also made it to the first round for the first time after she beat France’s Clothilde De Bernardi 6-2 6-1.

Konta made light work of her opponent, who is ranked 315th in the world, as she took a 4-0 lead in the opening set before another break early in the second set her on course for a comfortable win.

The 24-year-old was knocked out in the final qualifying round 12 months ago and last progressed to the main draw of a grand slam in 2012 at the US Open.
