Davis: Tories must regain lost ground

TORY MP David Davis urged Conservatives yesterday to “take back” the political ground seized from the party by Ukip.

Speaking as the party reeled from a second Conservative MP defection to Ukip, the MP for Haltemprice and Howden conceded: “Nobody can deny that yesterday was a bad day for us.

“But the Reckless by-election may well prove a point for us. We need to deny the space taken up by Ukip that we traditionally held.”

However, he stressed this wasn’t about “becoming more right-wing” but reclaiming the party’s roots and driving home “our standard line that a vote for Farage is a vote for Miliband.”

And he called for the need to “escape the liberal menace” in order for the Conservatives to be free from any influence to water down their most hard-line policies.
