Peer berates 'militant' 38 Degrees

CAMPAIGN group 38 Degrees has proved itself “a bit like the Militant tendency” in its attacks on MPs’ pay, a Labour peer said yesterday.

Former MP Lady Corston made the comments during the second reading in the House of Lords of the Recall of MPs Bill.

She criticised provisions to allow voters to sign a petition forcing a by-election.

“I have been told members are having to respond to coverage they get in certain parts of the press and 38 Degrees,” she said.

“You cannot please these people, they are a bit like the Militant tendency — whatever you give them they want more.

“Members of Parliament are having to testify to the fact that they will not accept a pay rise to which they are manifestly entitled as they earn far less than the average secondary school head teacher.”

Supporters of Trotskyist group Militant were expelled from Neil Kinnock’s Labour in the 1980s and early 90s.
