AUSTRALIA captain Steve Smith sent his best wishes to opposite number Eoin Morgan yesterday after completing a one-day series victory over England.
Morgan was struck on the head by a bouncer from Mitchell Starc in the fifth one-day international at Old Trafford, which Australia won by eight wickets to take the series 3-2.
Morgan was forced to retire hurt and, suffering from concussion, took no further part in the game.
The incident brought back memories of the tragic death of Australian Phil Hughes in Sydney last year and plenty of concern was shown for Morgan on the field.
Speaking at the post-match presentation, Smith said: “I must say I have got a lot of concern for Eoin at the moment. It was a nasty knock. I really hope his health and well-being is okay.
“This team has been through a few tough things, none more so than last summer and you don’t want to see anything like that happen on a cricket field. It was a tough couple of moments but I thought the boys were really good today.”
James Taylor, who took over captaincy duties, offered an update on Morgan’s condition.
He said: “Obviously he received a serious ball from Mitchell Starc. He is a little bit groggy, got concussed, but will hopefully rest up well over the next week.”
