INCUMBENT Alassane Ouattara was declared the winner by a huge margin in Ivory Coast’s presidential election yesterday.
The electoral commission announced that Rally of the Republicans (RDR) candiate Mr Ouattara had won 84 per cent of the of the vote.
Ivorian Popular Front (FPI) candidate Pascal Affi N’Guessan came second with just 9 per cent.
The US embassy in the capital Abidjan declared Monday’s polling “peaceful, transparent, credible and inclusive.”
Former International Monetary Fund deputy managing director Mr Ouattara came to power in a 2011 coup d’etat against FPI president Laurent Gbagbo, backed by the French military.
The coup followed months of opposition riots over disputed presidential election results that left some 3,000 people dead.
Mr Gbagbo was abducted by French troops and now faces trial at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in the Hague over the deaths.
On Monday the ICC rejected his request to have the start of the trial held in his own country.
