THE FUN never stops in Spy, starting with Melissa McCarthy raising laughs galore as daffy deskbound CIA analyst Susan Cooper who guides super-secret agent Bradley Fine (Jude Law) via his earpiece — until he suddenly vanishes.
Then, after top agent Rick Ford (Jason Statham) is compromised, Cooper is sent undercover to foil a deadly arms dealer and save the world in a supremely silly and hugely entertaining spoof.
McCarthy proves that her roles in Bridesmaids and The Heat were no flashes in the pan with a hilarious and foul-mouthed performance that keeps the story moving.
Law’s 007 send-up is often more fun than the real thing, Statham is unexpectedly amusing and Miranda Hart hits all the right notes as McCarthy’s unlikely CIA ally Nancy B Artingstall.
Paul Feig’s satirically smart script and matching direction creates an action comedy that doesn’t ever take itself seriously — and it’s all the more fun for it.Alan Frank
