Silvio Berlusconi sentenced to helping the elderly after tax fraud conviction

77-year-old must spend 4 hours a week assisting an old people's centre

Super-rich septuagenarian Silvio Berlusconi will have to spend four hours a week serving the elderly to repay Italian society for tax fraud.

A Milan court upheld the first-ever sentence against the oft-accused media baron yesterday.

The conviction means the former prime minister won’t be allowed to run for upcoming European elections — but he remains a serious political force as leader of Forza Italia.

The court ruled that Mr Berlusconi must spend most of his time in the Lombard region where he lives, though he’s allowed to travel to Rome from Tuesday to Thursday each week.

The 77-year-old must spend four hours straight in an unspecified old people’s centre. It wasn’t clear what he’d be expected to do there.

Mr Berlusconi was sentenced to four years under house arrest for tax fraud, reduced to one year in a general amnesty.

The year of community service may be reduced by 45 days.
