Thousands of health workers’ pay and conditions will suffer as a result of an NHS trust setting up a private company, a union warned yesterday.
Surrey & Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust set up a new private limited company, which GMB warned “could lead to backdoor privatisation” affecting 2,500 staff.
The union warned the new SABP Care Ltd could force the transfer of some staff on reduced terms and conditions, creating a two-tier workforce.
GMB southern regional secretary Paul Maloney said: “The trust board were told that the aim of this wholly owned subsidiary is to achieve success in growing new services and markets. GMB is far from convinced that this is the real aim.”
The NHS trust called GMB’s fears “totally unfounded.”
Surrey & Borders Partnership chief executive Fiona Edwards said: “We have absolutely no plans to transfer our NHS staff to our private company.”
