Bristol urges women to stand up for the NHS

HUNDREDS of people are expected to march through Bristol today calling on the nine million women who didn’t vote in 2010 to back the NHS this May.

The city is the birthplace of Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to join the British General Medical Council’s register.

Campaigners have reignited the enthusiasm from last year’s pro-NHS trek from Jarrow to London under the banner People’s Vote for the NHS.

The first salvo of the campaign took place in Tredegar — birthplace of NHS founder Aneurin Bevan — in Wales on March 1, where actor Martin Sheen roused marchers with a speech in defence of the NHS.

Further marches are planned for Nottingham and Jarrow on March 28.
