A RALLY will be held tomorrow in solidarity with victimised newspaper trade unionist Phil Turner, backed by local Labour MP Louise Haigh.
Journalists’ union NUJ activist Mr Turner, a reporter who has worked at the Rotherham Advertiser in south Yorkshire for more than 30 years, was selected for compulsory redundancy after the paper was taken over by a new chief executive.
He was the only staff member chosen out of a 14-strong team and his colleagues believe it is because of his trade union activities as father of the chapel — equivalent to a shop steward role — and previous work on the NUJ national executive.
The rally, calling for withdrawal of the redundancy, will be held at noon in All Saints Square, Rotherham.
Staff will also stage a 24-hour strike in his support on Thursday June 11.
Yorkshire and Humberside’s TUC regional council, Yorkshire trades councils and union branches are urging support for the rally and strike.
