Cricket: Rain delays unable to stop Aussie downfall

James Anderson took expert advantage of favourable conditions yesterday as England shot Australia out for 136 before tea on day one of the third Test at Edgbaston.

Steven Finn, back from a two-year Test absence, struck twice in his first three overs and then Anderson (six for 47) produced an exemplary spell of seam and swing to take four wickets for seven runs after lunch.

Only opener Chris Rogers (52) resisted in a prolific sequence of nine half-centuries in his last 11 Test innings.

The day’s play was constantly broken up due to the rain and Alastair Cook and Adam Lyth then had to come through just 3.5 overs before another shower brought an early tea with England on seven for none.

But just after tea, Lyth was dismissed for 10 and England were on 76-1 as the Star went to press.
