Maria Duarte reviews 'Les Combattants'

Les Combattants Directed by Thomas Cailley 3/5

LOVE fights for survival in this charming but surreal rom com set in a French military boot camp.

In it, shy and gentle Arnaud, (Kevin Azais) becomes fascinated by the brusque and forthright Madeleine (Adele Haenel), who’s determined to learn survival skills because she believes that the end of the world is nigh. So, when she signs up for an army summer training programme he follows suit to get to know her better.

In what ensues, Thomas Cailley delivers an expertly handled rom com with a twist, in which the stereotypical male and female roles are reversed. Haenel is phenomenal as the prickly and inconsiderate Madeleine who says exactly what she thinks, while Arnaud is the sensitive soul who does his utmost to get past her thorny exterior. Refreshing and amusing feel-good fare.
