Syrian rebels free Fijians captured on UN patrol

Nusra Front Syrian rebels have released all 45 Fijian peacekeepers they had held captive for two weeks, the United Nations said yesterday.

Fighters captured the Fijian troops on August 28 in the Golan Heights, where a 1,200-strong UN force patrols the zone between Syria and Israel.

“We can confirm they have been released,” UN deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said, adding they were freed at the Quneitra crossing point in the Syrian-controlled part of the Golan Heights.

The UN said that all 45 of the Fijian troops were “in good condition” and would be taken for medical assessment.

The Fijians were captured after rebels seized control of the Quneitra crossing from government troops.

According to the peacekeepers, the group had demanded to be taken off the UN terrorist list, wanted humanitarian aid delivered to Syria and compensation for three fighters killed in a shootout with UN officers.
