CONSERVATIVES led by former espionage chief Tomislav Karamarko scored a narrow victory over Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic’s ruling Social Democrats in Croatia’s general election on Sunday.
Mr Karamarko’s Croatian Democratic Union won 59 seats out of 151, against 56 for the Social Democrats.
The formation of a new government will depend on several smaller parties, with the potential kingmaker likely to be third-placed party Most (Bridge) with 19 seats.
Mr Milanovic urged Most leaders yesterday to start immediate talks, though the party pledged before the election not to enter a coalition with any of the big parties.
However, the party, which is largely centred on Dalmatia, left open the possibility of giving them support in parliament in return for unspecified “radical” political, social and economic reforms.
“I don’t believe that either of the big parties will agree with our reform proposals,” said Most leader Bozo Petrov.
