Students ‘linked to kidnapping’ arrested

TURKISH authorities detained 19 students in Antalya yesterday, a day after police stormed an Istanbul courthouse, killing prosecutor Mehmet Selim Kiraz and two hostage-takers.

The Antalya police arrested students supposedly linked to the outlawed Marxist Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C), the group behind the siege.

Mr Kiraz was taken hostage in revenge for 15-year-old Berkin Elvan’s death after being hit by a tear-gas canister during anti-government protests in 2014.

He was responsible for the investigation into the teenager’s death.

Police claimed they tried to rescue him after the hostage-takers fired shots.

Mr Kiraz was fatally wounded during the operation and died later in hospital.

Both attackers were also killed.

Meanwhile, a gunman who smashed a window and unfurled a flag at the offices of Turkey’s ruling party was also arrested.

Two armed men had been seen entering the AK Party offices in an industrial suburb of Istanbul, but just one man was detained.
