Akel slams Ban for ‘unhelpful’ report

Cypriot communist party Akel slammed UN secretary-general Ban Ki Moon’s latest report on the island’s peace process yesterday.

The party’s Cyprus problem office chief Toumazos Tsielepis said that Mr Ban’s position “not only does not help towards defusing the crisis, but rather encourages Turkey to continue to provoke and brazenly violate fundamental principles of international law.”

Cyprus has been divided since a Turkish invasion in 1974 which resulted in the formation of a breakaway Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which is not recognised by the international community.

Mr Ban failed to condemn Turkish violations of Cyprus’s exclusive economic zone and its bid to conduct a seismic survey in the island’s waters, Akel said.

The Cypriot government has also objected to the UN report, which called on all parties to resume negotiations on a solution to the division without mentioning Turkish provocations which led Cyprus to walk out.
