Crystal Palace ran out comprehensive winners of Saturday’s London derby, with West Ham only really getting going when the away side were reduced to 10 men and the game was already lost.
Hammers manager Sam Allardyce was disappointed following such a poor display.
“I’m in a state of shock, having seen the players underperform in the way that they did today.
“We have got to look to the future and get things right, especially with two difficult games (against Chelsea and Arsenal) ahead of us,” said Allardyce who now faces the prospect of seeing the club’s European prospects disappearing over the horizon as the season enters its final stages.
Allardyce was particularly disappointed at conceding all three goals to set plays. “Crystal Palace have struggled to score in open play. We haven’t competed.”
He regretted his team’s bad luck, hitting the woodwork twice, via Mark Noble and debutant Nene, then being denied a penalty, when Mile Jedinak felled Diafra Sakho in the area with his elbow.
Allardyce said it would have been a red card and penalty if referee Mike Dean had had a clear sight of the incident.
The home side certainly began in lacklustre mood, with the Eagles taking the lead in the 40th minute, when Glenn Murray header deflecting in off Aaron Creswell.
Palace struck again five minutes into the second half with Scott Dann rising to head home a Jason Puncheon corner.
Murray was a handful all afternoon for the Irons defence, arriving once again in the 62nd minute to put a diving header into the net. The big strikers luck did not last though, as he was sent off with 15 minutes remaining for a second bookable offence.
It was from this point that West Ham piled on the pressure, getting one back via a sweetly struck shot by Enner Valencia from just outside the area. More chances came but were spurned in what proved a disappointing day for the home side.
