Nepal: Minister asks foreign aid workers to return home

NEPAL’S government urged foreign rescue workers in the capital Kathmandu to return home yesterday.

Information Minister Minendra Rijal said major rescue work in Kathmandu and surrounding areas had been completed and further operations could be carried out by local workers.

However, work remained in villages and remote mountain areas and foreign volunteers could work with local rescuers in those areas, he said.

Since the April 25 earthquake, 4,050 rescue workers from 34 different countries have flown to Nepal to help with rescue operations, provide emergency medical care and distribute food and other necessities.

The death toll from the quake, Nepal’s worst in more than 80 years, has reached 7,276, police said.

Meanwhile, in Brussels, the European Union approved €20 million (£14.7m) in emergency aid to Nepal.

The commitment followed a request for help from the Nepalese government, which would face a huge funding gap without an increase in international aid.
